UNION, LOUISIANA |
Inspiration: This
place is where I grew up and where my deep seated love of the country
way of life was born. Union, a village too small to have its own post
office, sits nestled inside a curve of the Mississippi River, downriver
from the Sunshine Bridge and upstream from Zen-Noh Grain elevator and
Hymel's Seafood Restaurant. The green expanse you see there are the
sugarcane fields where I spent hour upon hour riding horseback, first on
my pony and then on my Quarter Horses as a kid. A piece of my heart will
always reside in Union.

Superflare: The Fortunate Ones: The life one lives here
is reflected in the personalities of all of the principal characters
other than Tyler. I could also picture riding a horse on dirt roads that
were surrounded by a crop that is above my head. |

The Jack Butler series: Jack
lives on a sprawling estate, Ver Largo, which means long view, on the
banks for the Mississippi River in St. James Parish. |

MATURE PECAN TREES IN A PASTURE |

Inspiration: In
the book, Abby is with Rebecca looking out of the kitchen window and she
sees a mature pecan grove with the herd of cattle at Papaw's draft
horses in it. I also picture this setting in my head when Colt rides
into and out of the woods on a wagon loaded with corn. The gravel road
that leads to the wooden bridge can barely be seen on the left in the background of this picture. |

Inspiration: This
is a house I'm familiar with and I used it for the family's farmhouse.
It was built in the early 1890's. |

DOMINO SHACK |

Inspiration: This
adorable little building was my inspiration for the Domino Shack,
although I took a lot of liberty with this location, including setting
it in Louisiana. My friends, who are pictured, and I happened upon it while on a road trip.
We dropped in and spent an hour there being taught how to properly play dominoes by
a few kind and humorous retirees. It's a good memory for all of us. |

BAMBOO LINED DRIVEWAY |

Book: Superflare:
The Fortunate Ones |
Inspiration: I
used the bamboo along Trevor Whitson's driveway as a landmark a few
times to help you know where you were on Richmond Road. This stand of
bamboo that lines this little driveway, the one I pictured in my head, is forty feet tall. |
